The purpose of this training is to explain the teach-back communication technique in detail and provide an opportunity to practice this technique in a learning environment.
Objectives:
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Identify the role of CHWs in promoting health literacy in clinical and community settings.
- Describe use of teach-back in different health education scenarios.
- Develop proficiency in practicing the health communication skill of teach-back.
- CHWs may receive 1.5 DSHS certified CEUs for each webinar attended.
Navigating Mental Health Conversations – April 23
This live Zoom session will help CHWs start conversations about mental health and give CHWs tools to help their clients.

The goal of this course is to provide Community Health Workers with knowledge and tools to navigate conversations about common mental health conditions, explore communication skills, identify local and national resources, and apply best practices when referring clients. This course consists of:
- 1.5-hour required, eLearning prerequisite, Navigating Mental Health Conversations: A Guide for Community Health Workers (note: course resources are Texas-based). If you have completed the course already, you will not have to complete it again.
- 2.5-hour live Zoom session
After successfully completing both parts of the course, learners can receive 1.5 hours of Texas DSHS-certified CHW CEUs for the self-paced e-learning and 2.5 hours of CHW or CHW-I CEUs for the live session.
Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Share wisdom from professional and personal experience related to cultural humility, trauma, mental health, suicide, & self-care.
- Self-assess strengths and growing edges of the 7 steps, and share tips for improvement, then debrief.
- Explore a local and national resource, and best practices when referring clients.
Continuing Education
After successfully completing the course, learners may receive 2.5 hours of DSHS certified CHW or CHWI CEUs. This includes .5 hour Service Coordination, 1 communication skills, and 1 Interpersonal skills.

Supporting Clients with Substance Use & Mental Health Issues – May 21st
CoThis live Zoom session will increase awareness about issues related to mental health and substance use and give CHWs tools to help their clients.

This session will discuss the link between substance use and mental illness, and review signs and symptoms that CHWs can be aware of so they can better assist clients with resources and referrals..
There is a required prerequisite 2.5 hour course, Raising Awareness and Offering Help for Mental Health and Substance Use, that will help CHWs gain a base level of knowledge so the live Zoom session can focus on skills and scenarios. If you have completed the course already, you will not have to complete it again.
Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- List common mental disorders and signs of emotional distress
- List the most misused substances and symptoms of misuse
- Practice using the Tobacco, Alcohol, Prescription medication, and other Substance use (TAPS) tool
- Practice using a harm reduction approach when creating Brief Negotiated Interviews (BNIs) action plans
- Explore the Texas Outreach, Screening, Assessment and Referral (OSAR) program to find local referrals
Continuing Education
After successfully completing the course, learners may receive 2 hours of DSHS certified CHW or CHWI CEUs. This includes 1 hour Knowledge Base, 1 hour Interpersonal Skills.

The purpose of this module is to introduce participants to the different types of data, how to read and interpret data, and the role of CHWs in collecting and using data.

This course consists of pre-work, one live Zoom session, and post-work and can take up to 4 hours to complete all modules. The goal of this course is to provide an overview of trauma, how it affects the brain, and how it impacts health behaviors and outcomes.

Advanced Motivational Interviewing – May 29, 2024
The goal of this course is to provide Community Health Workers with a space to practice and improve advanced motivational skills (MI) through roleplay. A prerequisite e-learning module, “How do I Help my Clients Make Changes to Improve Their Health? An Introduction to Motivational Interviewing for CHWs” is required to join the live Zoom training, however, this course is not meant as an introduction to MI. This training will offer CHWs familiar with MI an opportunity to practice 1) coding sessions for effective use of OARS, 2) ‘defusing discord’, 3) using OARS in a role play, and 4) crafting complex reflections. Advanced Motivational Interviewing – March 29th, 2023

The Advanced MI course was created for community health workers who have some knowledge of basic motivational interviewing skills and who want to practice basic and intermediate skills in an interactive and supportive environment. By the end of this training, participants will have the opportunity to: code exemplar MI sessions for effective use of OARS; practice ‘Defusing Discord’; practice OARS techniques in role plays, based on current skill (novice vs advanced); and practice crafting complex reflections for hypothetical client statements. This course consists of 2 hours of pre/post work and a 2-hour live Zoom session; please note that pre-work must be completed in advance of the live Zoom session, to attend the session. Navigating the Maze: Consent, Confidentiality, and Access to Healthcare for Texas Youth – August 31st, 2022
Texas Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy
Texas youth face many barriers to accessing health services, including complicated funding streams and confusing laws around consent to healthcare. This hands-on training will provide a deep dive into the laws that regulate legal consent to healthcare for minors, with a focus on reproductive and mental health care. We will also discuss best practices in patient confidentiality and reporting requirements. We will then provide an overview of the programs that provide reproductive care in Texas (including Title X) and the consent requirements within these programs. The training will include activities to identify personal value systems and beliefs that practitioners may bring into the clinic.
