This live Zoom session will increase awareness about issues related to mental health and substance use and give CHWs tools to help their clients.

August 20th, 2025 from 9am – 11am CST

This session will discuss the link between substance use and mental illness, and review signs and symptoms that CHWs can be aware of so they can better assist clients with resources and referrals..

There is a required prerequisite 2.5 hour course, Raising Awareness and Offering Help for Mental Health and Substance Use, that will help CHWs gain a base level of knowledge so the live Zoom session can focus on skills and scenarios. If you have completed the course already, you will not have to complete it again.

Objectives

Participants will be able to: 

  • List common mental disorders and signs of emotional distress
  • List the most misused substances and symptoms of misuse
  • Practice using the Tobacco, Alcohol, Prescription medication, and other Substance use (TAPS) tool
  • Practice using a harm reduction approach when creating Brief Negotiated Interviews (BNIs) action plans 
  • Explore the Texas Outreach, Screening, Assessment and Referral (OSAR) program to find local referrals

Continuing Education

After successfully completing the course, learners may receive 2 hours of DSHS certified CHW or CHWI CEUs. This includes 1 hour Knowledge Base, 1 hour Interpersonal Skills.

Cardea is approved by the Texas Department of State Health Services to provide continuing CHW hours in Texas, Certification #44 for CHW and #50 for CHWIs.

Course Completion

  • Learners are expected to complete all parts of the course, including the prerequisite course, in order to receive your certificate of completion
  • The instructor-led portion of the course on Zoom is interactive, and learners must participate to complete it
  • The maximum number of participants allowed into the live Zoom course is 45.
