Our family literacy two-generation approach provides opportunities for parents and their children to learn together. This evidence based, best practice increases the likelihood of success for families.
KLRU Play to Learn
El Buen partners with United Way of Central Texas to provide school readiness support for families with pre-school age children. New parents gain knowledge and tools to be more connected to school and the community by hearing from guest speakers as well as learning to use learning apps and other educational technologies with their families. Parents and children attend class weekly for 10 sessions.
PALS (Play and Learning Strategies)
PALS is a 14 week class that meets once a week for 2 hours for parents that have children 18 months to 4 years old. PALS gives parents strategies and activities for helping their toddlers with good behavior, reading and speech abilities. At PALS we know you are your child’s first and best teacher! Your PALS Coach will help you get your toddler ready for pre-k/kindergarten. Free childcare is provided for all parents who take PALS classes. The first 1.5 hours of class parents and toddlers will be in separate classrooms. The last half hour of class parents will visit the toddlers classroom to play with their children. El Buen offers this program in the Spring and Summer.
We have been collaborating with Phoenix House since 2012. Their prevention and education services highlight the dangers of drug use, reinforce self-esteem, and educate teens and adults to make positive choices. These services are provided in a variety of settings and ways, including research-based curricula in public and private schools, community centers such as El Buen, recreation centers, hospitals, and various other sites. Their programs are offered to students, faculty members, parents, and high-risk youth as they believe the entire community can benefit from the useful resources provided regarding personal health and family unity.
