Deeply concerned about the stark reality of limited access to health care the majority of our Latino friends in Austin face on a daily basis, El Buen Samaritano has resolved to partner with Día de la Mujer Latina and play yet a more active role in the current community-wide efforts geared towards providing health-education opportunities to the Latino community in Austin.

According to the Intercultural Cancer Council:

  • Latinos make up 25 percent of the nation's uninsured
  • Uninsured Latina women with breast cancer are 2.3 times more likely to be diagnosed at a larger stage, making it less treatable
  • Uninsured Latino men with prostate cancer are 3.75 more likely to be diagnosed at a later stage, making it less treatable

With the help of the Austin community, we hope to increase the cancer screening participation rates that are currently making Latinos more likely to be diagnosed at a more advanced stage when fewer treatment options are available.

Free medical exams will be provided to qualified individuals who register on Saturday, September 18. View the flyer for details or call El Buen's information line—(512) 439-0744—for details on eligibility for free exams.

Since 1990, El Buen Samaritano has made a traditional Thanksgiving meal possible for hundreds of low-income families in Austin, distributing turkeys and the necessary ingredients to prepare a traditional Thanksgiving meal.

On November 20, 2010, El Buen Samaritano hopes to provide 1,000 families with the necessary ingredients to prepare a Thanksgiving meal.

Help us reach this goal by committing to provide Thanksgiving baskets!

Your Thanksgiving basket donation/s may be dropped off or picked up during the week of November 15. To ensure that we have the necessary amount of baskets, please fill out this Thanksgiving Basket Commitment Form no later than September 30, 2010.
