Early-childhood & Youth Education Programs
El Buen’s Evening Tutoring Program is designed to provide homework assistance to children and youth between the ages of six and 18 whose parents are enrolled in El Buen’s ESL Program. This free evening tutoring program provides students with the educational support outside of their educational environment, helping them bridge the gap between school and home.
With an emphasis on literacy, El Buen’s Reading Buddies Program is designed to teach children between the ages of six and 12 important literary components such as plot, characterization, setting, conflict, etc. With activities such as library trips, reading scavenging hunts, creating characterization posters and performing in a readers’ theatre play, the goal of the program is to spark an interest in reading through fun literary outlets while evaluating their progress in reading fluency, word count, expression and comprehension through pre and post-assessments.
Outdoor Kids is an outdoor program that has been created to be both fun and educational. Students will be exposed to a variety of activities that will teach them about outdoor survivor skills, plant and animal wildlife, nature conservation and more. This program hopes to give students, who come from a primarily urban setting, the opportunity to become familiar with the natural world while promoting an active healthy lifestyle. This program occurs once a month and coincides with the adult life skills workshops.
The Child Learning Center (CLC) provides clients throughout El Buen the opportunity to attend programs and services while their children are being cared for in a safe and academic-focused environment. Modeled after the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Head Start Program, El Buen’s Child Learning Center focuses on early-childhood learning objectives and mastery skills, which are designed to prepare toddlers for preschool. Through a detailed curriculum, incorporating technology education through the use of two children-friendly computers known as IBM Explorers, and educational activities which focus on civic, community and culture, El Buen’s CLC empowers children to successfully enter the public school system by providing them with an education grounded with a preliteracy curriculum.
